Our
Butchers shop was built onto the main farmhouse of Nantleach in
the autumn of 2002. Aided by a small grant from the WDA (Welsh department
of Agriculture) under the meat marketing and processing scheme,
it enabled us to begin to realise our project of cutting preparing
and packaging our own Beef and Lamb, on our own premises.
The shop consists
of a Cold room, where beef and lamb carcasses are bought back from
the abattoir and hung. A preparation room where the beef and lamb
are cut, and packaged or prepared into burgers and sausages, and
an outer room where we have a freezer and a storage area.
Some
locals now visit the shop to purchase meat. We usually cut beef
at least every two weeks, which presently uses our entire available
bullocks. We hope that mail order lamb sales will begin to increase.
This will give us the opportunity to employ locally, which is very
important in our rural economy, where agricultural jobs have become
scarce over the past years since foot and mouth.
We are currently
awaiting grant aid to extend our butchers facilities to enable us
to supply Lamb, for next day delivery via mail order.
