What you give your family to eat is important to you, and
it's important to us too. We are proud of the care that
is put into producing our animals. All are fattened on sweet
Welsh grass, sileage or hay, and rolled barley is used as
a supplement with no artificial growth aids used.
Rachael and Philip Layton are a couple with three young
children and two older children living in Dolau, a small
village outside the Victorian Spa town of Llandrindod Wells.
Philip and his brothers Len and
Colin have farmed their traditional family hill farm since
they were 16, the farm ahs been in their family for four
generations, but over the past 15 years they have bought
neighbouring land and increased the size of the original
farm by over 100%.
Rachael, originally from Leek
in Staffordshire, had a high profile job in retail and
marketing. She is now a qualified play worker and dance
teacher, and has played an active role in supporting her
local community over the past 10 years, helping to raise
over £150,000 in grants and
funding for local projects. She is a member of the W.I.,
her children’s school PTA, and the Out of School
Club committee; she is also chairperson of Llandovery farmers
market. Currently she is studying for her NVQ level 4 in
Management
Their farm is made up of
several smaller farms, which have been bought by their
family over the past forty years, including Blaen-y-Cwm
Mawr, Nantleach, Little Park, Brynlefrith, Blaen-y-Cwm,
and the most recent farm purchase of Caergynant. They farm
in a traditional style, amongst the rolling Radnorshire
hills, where their pedigree Welsh Black herd and variety
of Welsh Sheep graze against the gentle flowing River Ithon.
During the foot and mouth year of 2001 they realised that
they had to find a way of obtaining a better price for
their fat stock if they were to be able to pass on the
family farm to the next generation, their children Hannah
now aged 9, James aged 7, and Jessica aged 6. Philip was
convinced that their pedigree Welsh Black Beef with full
traceabilty and full herd health Status would fetch a reasonable
retail price if they could take their own stock from fat
to the final customer, he also wanted the customer to have
the experience of eating full flavoured mature beef, and
therefore to benefit from the natural feeding, and the
long hanging of the carcass, and so Dolithon Meats were
born, a phoenix rising from the ashes of the foot and mouth
crisis.
Rachael’s and Philip’s motto is “we
care for the food you eat so you don’t have to worry
about what you’re eating”, and thus they provide
their customers with beef and lamb born and bred on the
farm, with 100% traceabilty, with the addition of being
members of the FAWL scheme and having full herd health
status from the Welsh Black Society, and their farm being
members of the ESA, and environment scheme, whereby the
farm pledges to structure their farming around proven environmental
strategies. Their ethos includes no overuse of antibiotics,
use of homeopathic remedies, as little use of chemicals
as possible and only a small amount of fertiliser used
on their fields, some of which are 1000ft above sea level,
contacting with pure air, as little transport ventures
up into our hills and small lanes. Business is conducted
so that the customer, the environment, nature, and of course
their beautiful home is not exploited in any way.
Many customers travel to
Nantleach, where the butcher’s
facility is situated, as they begin the assent from our
high ground down into the dingle where the shop is the
view is spectacularly breathtaking. We welcome visitors
and some venture into our sheds to see our cattle or sheep
when we are lambing, we are proud that people can see that
we genuinely care for our animals and ultimately for the
food you eat. If you live a long way from us, feel free
